On November 15, 2018, Peg’s Foundation recognized individuals and organizations bringing remarkable value to the community. More than 450 people gathered for the dinner and awards ceremony at the NEOMED Education and Wellness (NEW) Center in Rootstown.
Before the presentation, Rick Kellar, Foundation President, talked about the work being done by the board, staff, peers, and partners as a joint effort. “Tonight’s recipients are not only our partners, but our family.” He emphasized that the work of the award recipients breaks down barriers that people living with mental illness face every day. “Together, we are advancing the Foundation’s Mission.” recognizing excellent work in mental health.
2018 Compass Award winner, Dr. Michael F. Hogan, spent his 25 year career managing mental health systems in Connecticut, Ohio, and New York. He was the longest tenured director of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and served from 1991-2007. During that time, President George W. Bush appointed him to chair the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health and he guided the Commission to make specific recommendations that contributed to national mental health system reforms.
Magnolia Clubhouse and NAMI Summit County received Awards of Excellence for developing communities that reduce isolation and encourage hope for recovery.
Magnolia Clubhouse at University Circle in Cleveland has a fundamental role bringing purpose into the lives of people living with mental illness and supporting them with their education, finding work, and involvement in community activities. The Clubhouse provides a welcoming and supportive environment while empowering the members to pursue their recovery goals, dreams, and a future with a purpose and respect.
NAMI Summit County shows exemplary leadership by facilitating partnerships among organizations and finding ways to focus on solutions, not problems. They build relationships with families and community service providers ensuring individuals with mental illness receive the treatment services they need to reach their fullest potential and that innovative practice always includes the family.
In addition to the honors and awards given, each recipient received a Certificate of Commendation signed by Ohio Governor John R. Kasich and Lieutenant Governor, Mary Taylor for their commitment and dedication to their work.
At the end of the night, Mr. Kellar, said “Our Founder, Peg Morgan, guided us to ‘Think Bigger!’ We challenge ourselves to follow her directive and engage in collaborative dialogue that sparks new ideas.”
The Morgan Impact Awards, established in 2010, celebrates significant contributions and exceptional commitment to the Foundation’s mission. Each year, Peg’s Foundation recognizes individuals and organizations for their outstanding achievements in mental health, education and the arts. The program celebrates the award recipients at the annual Morgan Impact Awards. The award recipients along with their guests are invited to attend this invitation-only, red carpet event to be honored and highlighted by the community.
The award statue is created at the Fräbel Glass Art Studio in Atlanta, Georgia and represents Peg’s favorite flower, the American Dogwood. Each sculpture is made by hand without the use of molds and is a unique work of glass art.
